UoM Finance 뭐 배울까? I 영국유학

오늘은 UoM 문과의 꽃이랄까 경제 금융 계열 전공 소개와 학과 시스템을 소개해보려고 한다. 
앞서 소개했듯, 난 BA Econ Economics & Finance 전공이다. 총 3년 과정으로 2025년 6월 졸업 예정이다. 
 

영국 대학에 가게 된 서사는 이러하다:
미국 고등학교를 졸업했고 대학교도 미국에서 진학 예정이었지만 코로나가 심해져 대면 수업이 불가했다. 그 학비를 내고 온라인 수업을 듣는 건 원치 않았기에 갭이어를 가졌다. 갭이어가 끝날 즈음, 고등학교 친구가 NCUK 파운데이션으로 영국 대학에 진학했고, 졸업까지 3년밖에 걸리지 않는다라고 해 관심을 가지게 되었다. 
 
리서치했을 때, 영국 대학교의 메리트는
1. 3년제
2. 교양과목이 상대적으로 없고 전공에 더 집중
3. 2년 취업비자 제도 부활

이 세 가지가 큰 메리트로 보였다. 
 


학과는 처음엔 경제 정책 관련이나 Fintech 회사에서 일하고 싶어 선택했고, 지금은 좀 더 컨설팅이나 투자은행에 관심이 생겼다. 앞으로 뭐 할 지는 남은 시간 동안 차차 고민할 예정이다.

학과 소개
UoM Economics & Finance Course Overview

 
BA(Econ) Economics & Finance는 경제를 주 전공으로 다른 사회 과학 과목과 함께 들을 수 있다. ICAEW, CIMA, ACCA 같은 회계 기관에서 Accreditation 기회도 있으며, 향후 Finance, Accouting 등으로 Pathway 변경이 용이하다. 



아래는 학교에서 소개하는 학과 소개다: 

• The BA(Econ) in Economics and Finance is an interdisciplinary course allowing you to specialize in Economics, along with other social science units such as philosophy, politics, and sociology.
• You have the flexibility to either delve into technical units in Economics such as Econometrics and Mathematical Economics or combine Economics units covering inequality and climate change with social science units to develop a well-rounded understanding of social issues.
• The Economics and Finance pathway in the BA(Econ) course features a broad range of internationally recognized and research-led teaching in accounting, finance, economics, and law.
• You will develop an understanding of the relationship between economics, finance, and the social sciences. You will benefit from experts in business and social sciences with this jointly delivered degree by Alliance Manchester Business School and the School of Social Sciences.
• We are well connected with the three main accounting bodies (ICAEW, CIMA, and ACCA), along with international businesses, such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Kellogg's, and Rolls Royce.
• The course offers a flexible and relevant learning experience for anyone considering a career in finance, accounting, or banking. Pathways in BA(Econ) share a common first year, allowing you to switch to a different pathway after Year 1 if you want to.

 

일단, Entry Requirement는 A-level 기준 AAA와 ILETS Overall 6.5과 Each Component 6점 이상이 나와야 한다.

학과를 정할 땐, 세부적으로 어떠한 과목들을 배우는지 보는 게 좋다. 아무래도 3년간 공부할 것이기 때문에 관심이 있고 재밌어 보여야 한다. Compulsory는 얼마나 되고 Optional은 얼마나 선택할 수 있는지 고려하는 것도 필요하다. 관심만 있다면 3년간 공부가 힘들지만은 않을 거다. 

 
아마 학과 고를 때 Placement, Study Abroad, 또 Master Degree를 고민하시는 분들이 있을 거다. 
Master Degree 제외하고 우리 학교 기준, 1학년 끝나고 선택 가능하니 어떻게 할까 스트레스 안 받아도 될 것 같다. 
 
 
이건 Apply 할 때 냈던 PS ㅋㅋㅋㅋ,,, PS는 4000 Character 내로 써야 한다.

22/23 Economics & Finance 1학년 기준

하이라이트 된 것 제외 모두 1학년 공통 과목이다. 대상은 Finance를 Pathway로 가져가는 사람들. 전공에 Finance가 있다면 모두 같은 수업을 듣는다. 만약, Economics만 듣는다면 듣는 전공은 달라진다. 이 경우, 2학년 때 Finance 관련 과목을 듣기 위해선 1학년 때 Finance에서 60% 이상 받아야 한다. 하지만, 60% 이상 패스율은 30%도 되지 않는다고 한다. 

 
1년간 총 들어야 하는 Credit은 120이다. 이 안에서 Compulsory 제외한 학점을 선택하면 된다. Pathway마다 40 Credit을 채워야 한다. 예시: 전공이 Econ & Fin라면 Econ (40) Fin (40) 나머지 (40)으로 선택 가능하다는 뜻이다. 



Optional 선택할 때 관심 있는 과목을 듣는 게 좋겠지만 평가방식을 보고 선택하는 게 좋다. 아무래도 성적이 걸려있기에 고민해봐야 하는 것 중 하나다. 다른 필강들이 대면시험이 많다면 선택 과목은 에세이 위주로 선택하는 게 좋지 않을까 싶다.
 


**저기 표를 보면 알겠지만 1학년땐 수학과 사회과학 과목이 필강이라 남는 Credit이 20학점이다. 1학년을 해보니 2학기땐 따로 시험공부를 할 수 있는 기간이 없어 1학기에 최대한 끝내는 게 좋다.



참고로 저 Business Antropology는 꿀강이다 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ. 1500자 Essay (90%) 500자 Exceicse (10%). 인류학이라 해서 처음에 뭐지 했는데 들어보니 마케팅하시는 분들에게 좋을 것 같다. "인류학자는 기업 컨설팅을 할 때 소비자 경험을 직접 체험함으로써 설루션으로 신선한 접근법을 낸다."  한마디로 정리하자면 인류학 방법론과 Case Study를 한다. 
 


다른 추천 과목 중 하나는 SOST10142 Applied Statistics for Social Scientists다. 프로그래밍 R을 배우는데 자리가 한정적이니 빠르게 수강신청 하는 걸 추천한다.

Class Overview

수업 방식엔 크게 Tutorial, Lecture, Seminar가 있다. 모든 수업이 다 비슷한데 주마다 Lecture가 2시간 정도 있고 격주마다 Tutorial이 있다. UoM의 경우 Lecture는 거의 녹화본을 준다!  (학과마다 다름). 요게 아주 편하다. 시험 기간에 돌려볼 수도 있고 렉쳐를 빠졌다고 해도 크게 타격이 없다. 


 
수업 녹화본, 수업 교재 등등등 모든 정보는 Blackboard에 있다. 교수님께 뭘 물어보든 Blackboard를 이용하세요라고 하실 테니 먼저 찾아보자. 수업마다 학생수가 워낙 많기에 질문은 보통 Disccusion Board를 이용한다. 우린 Piazza라고 앱을 통해 질문한다. 질문을 하면 교수님과 그 외 튜터 분들이 답을 해주신다. Email보다 보통 빠르다. 학생수는 많으면 350명 이상도 들어간다. Uni Place에서 주로 수업을 하는데 첫 주엔 사람이 꽉 차 앉을자리도 없다.

Advanced Math (10) & Advanced Statistics (10)

수업구성: Lecture & Tutorial & Independent Studies (Mobius)
Lecture전 Mobius에서 먼저 예습을 해야 한다. Lecture에선 Q&A나 어려운 문제들을 같이 푼다. 

Advanced Math는 백터, 매트릭스, 미분을 배운다. 2학기 Micro나 Macro에 쓰이므로 꼭 잘 배워야 한다. 
Mobius로 공부를 먼저 하고 교과서까지 푼다면 어렵지 않게 좋은 성적을 받을 수 있다. ㅎ,,,ㅎ

Advanced Stat도 수업구성이나 평가 방식은 비슷하다. 다만, 엑셀도 시험에 들어가므로 Mobius를 꼼꼼히 봐야 한다. 난 1학기 Math보다 Stat이 더 좋았다. Regression, Probability, Distributions, Hypothesis Testing 등을 배운다.

수업구성: Lecture & Tutorial
각 주마다 주제가 달라진다. 이 수업은 사회와 관련된 이슈들을 알게 하는데 목적이 있다. 수업 제목에 나와있는 것처럼 권력과 가치에 관련된 주제들이다.
 
수업이 끝나고 3일 뒤 퀴즈가 있다. 5개 정도 풀면 되는데 교안을 잘 읽어보면 나오니 크게 걱정하지 않아도 된다.
마지막에 10개 강의 중 7개를 골라서 그에 대한 에세이를 써야 한다. 수업 내용 요약이 필요하니 미리미리 하는 게 좋다.

What they have learned is a different view than traditional economics theory, Emphasizing a few topics that they are particularly interested in, and Showing some contrasting thoughts to demonstrate critical thinking.
 

Financial Reporting  (10)

수업구성: Lecture & Tutorial
이 수업이 제일 어렵고 제일 재밌다. UoM 시험 중 가장 어려운 시험 중 하나라고 한다. 그만큼 과락하는 사람도 많고 낮은 점수를 받는 사람들도 많으니 시간을 두고 공부를 해야 한다. 1학기 시험들 중 유일하게 대면시험이다!!
 
Financial Reporting 재무제표에 대해 배운다.
크게 Balance Sheet / Income Statement / Cash Flow Statement로 나뉘고 작성 방법과 무엇이 있는지 배우게 된다. 
 
복식부기 작성을 필수로 해야 하니 그 부분을 잘 준비하면 도움이 된다. 이것만 해도 30%는 먹고 들어간다. 
 
22/23년부터 시험 방식이 바뀌었으니 그 족보부터 푸는 걸 추천하고 시간을 꼭 재보길 추천한다.
반드시 3개년도 시험 다 풀어봐야 한다.
기계적으로 풀어도 시간이 부족할 정도니 꼭 시간재고 풀자.

평가 방식:

22/23부터 시험 포맷이 바뀌었다. 년도 꼭 체크하기. 
22/23 기준 시험은 꽤 쉽게 나왔고 Formula sheet도 줘서 무리 없이 시험 봤다.

Introduction Management Accounting (10)

수업구성: Lecture &  Workshop
 
22/23부터 시험 포맷이 바뀌었다. 년도 꼭 체크하기. 
이건 시험이 좀 헷갈리게 나왔다. Financial Reporting처럼 엄청 어렵게 나오진 않았고 시험 시간도 준비만 잘한다면 부족하지 않게 풀 수 있다. 대신 Demonstration을 꼼꼼하게 풀어봐야 한다. 시험 준비할 때 5번씩은 다 풀어본 듯하다. 에세이 토픽은 미리 준다. 꼭 모범답안 작성해서 기계처럼 쓰길 바란다. 시간 단축에 아주 용이하다.

From what you see around you in your everyday life write a short description of EITHER how people relate to or use a brand or product and what it means to them (for example an item of clothing, a tech device, or fast food) OR how one set of people (for example students, your parents, your neighbors) adjust their living spaces to make themselves at home
1500 Words Essay	90%	Lecture week 2개만 골라서 에세이 쓰기.

 
To achieve marks above 60, i.e. a 2.1 in the UK system, you MUST demonstrate a general understanding of the issues raised by the course, show that you have read some of the materials that you write about, and be able to explain how various aspects of the course are connected.
